Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Right for You?

People often use the term “therapy.” But therapy isn’t just one thing. There are many different types of therapy. The one that’s best for you depends on many factors, such as your specific issue.

One type of therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The idea behind CBT is that your own ways of thinking can lead to your problems. CBT can teach you how to change your thinking patterns. This can help you better cope with your problems.

Research shows that CBT can be helpful for a variety of conditions. These include:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Chronic pain

  • Alcohol and drug use problems

  • Marital problems

  • Eating disorders

When to Consider Therapy

There are many different reasons why you might want to see a therapist. You should consider therapy if you:

  • Feel depressed, anxious, or angry

  • Have a chronic illness that’s affecting your mental or physical health

  • Are experiencing a major change such as divorce, the death of a loved one, or job change

  • Are engaging in harmful behaviors like taking drugs or drinking too much alcohol

  • Are having difficulty concentrating or doing day-to-day activities

Taking the Next Step

To find a mental health professional, contact your health insurance company. Ask for a list of providers. You can also ask family, friends, or another provider for recommendations.

When speaking with therapists, ask them what type of treatments they use. For example, do they use CBT to help with your problem?

The number of sessions you’ll need depends on your condition, your goals, and other factors. Most people start feeling better after just a few sessions.

If your symptoms affect your daily life, don’t wait to get help. Hoping the problem will go away can cause it to get worse and lead to bigger issues. The sooner you get help, the sooner you can start feeling better.
