Living Well with Arthritis
Although about a quarter of U.S. adults have arthritis, many aren’t taking advantage of ways to reduce pain and stay active, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Try these simple ways to live well and manage arthritis symptoms:
1. Get Moving
Physical activity helps reduce arthritis pain and improves mobility, yet a third of adults with arthritis don’t get any exercise, the CDC reports. Try an activity that is gentle on joints, such as walking, bike riding, swimming, or tai chi.
2. Eat More Fish
Omega-3 fatty acids, found in many fish varieties, can help combat joint pain and inflammation. Try grilled salmon or mackerel for a dose of these healthy fats.
3. Warm Up
A warm bath, shower, or whirlpool can help relieve stiff joints.
4. Follow Doctor’s Orders
Take arthritis prescriptions exactly as directed. Tell your doctor if you take other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, or supplements to avoid drug interactions.
5. Sleep on It
Balance your activity with plenty of rest. If your arthritis flares up, take time off to help get back to your active lifestyle safely.
